Roy and Bertrand Sosa moved with their family to Texas from Mexico as teenagers and settled in Austin. As they reached their late 20s, they knew the frustration of young people who had cash but no established credit history. Their solution was to devise a pre-paid debit card marketed to teenagers that would power online purchases. In 1999, working out of their apartment, they founded NetSpend Corporation with a modest $750 initial investment.
However, the brothers quickly realized that greater demand for their card was coming from the “unbanked” population—those without a banking relationship who are typically low-income and minority consumers—who were looking for the benefits of card transactions, such as access safety and flexibility, without the need for a bank account or credit history.
NetSpend’s core product is the All-Access MasterCard that users can purchase at more than 2,500 check cashing, grocery, and convenience stores across the U.S. Equally important, the Sosa brothers launched an extensive technological platform linking to national financial networks, such as PULSE and MasterCard, to support their cards. NetSpend, now with about 600,000 account holders, is the country’s biggest and fastest-growing processor and marketer of prepaid debit cards. In 2004, the Sosa brothers expect NetSpend to process $1 billion in transactions."
