Finding powers of a matrix?
OK, our book does a pretty poor job of covering this one topic, and I can't find it anywhere else on the web. How do you find the formula for the n-th power of a 2*2 matrix (where n is a positive integer). For example, I have the matrix -1 1 -16 7 How do I take it to the, say, 7th power without multiplying the d**n thing 7 times by itself?
