What is the best way to get a job in journalism?

I was recently let go from a public relations job in fort lauderdale florida which is ok because I am a writer. The problem and reason for the past job is that I have no idea how to get a job in journalism that is not freelance. My mother was a struggling freelance artist her whole life. I have lots of media contacts, but do not know how to approach them especially now that many are going to know i was laid off. Any advice?

the usual way is to get an internship with a local paper, radio or news station. perhaps you could volunteer for your local paper to get a portfolio together.
