How do I paint my car?

I drive a hoopty. The finish is fading and the car is toward the end of its life, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to repaint it some wild color and have it turn some heads before it dies. Can anybody give me a step by step tutorial on how to give it a new paint job? I don't know the first thing about doing this, so any information or recommendations you could offer regarding both materials and procedure would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
