Can I find a job that is right for me?

OK, here's the situation. I just turned 38 and I have not really made much of myself professionally. I have a degree in art, but have never worked as an illustrator or graphic designer, which is what I want to do. Instead, I've been stuck in dead-end retail or customer service jobs (including a 12 year long stint as the night clerk at a truck stop motel) and I feel like I can't make that leap or shift in reality to get me to a job where I at least don't dread going to work each morning. I am happily married and have 2 children and I can't afford to work entry level jobs that pay peanuts - I have a family to support. I'm feeling kind of desperate and that there might not be any hope. Can I find that job that allows me to use the skills I have and enjoy it, or is it just a pipe dream?
