What is the cause of high-pitch squeeking sound when car is moving at low speeds?

I don't hear it every time I use the car but is becoming more frequent. The noise is barely audible at high-speeds and STOPS when I apply the brakes. The rear axle assembly (where the tire is bolted) DOES NOT seem to rotate/spin evenly/freely when car is jacked-up although I have no problems rotating it by hand without exerting a lot of effort. Is this a problem with the bearings or is this related somehow to the brakes? Is this something that I can fix myself? If not, could anyone give me an idea how much it would cost me to have this repaired? Lastly, is this something that must be repaired as soon as possible? The car seems to run smoothly inspite of the annoyance. Please advice. BTW, I'm driving a 2000 Maxima GLE Automatic

u may have warped ur brake discs, try taking the brake pads out n scuffin them up on a slightly rough surface. If ur brake pads n discs have become polished(shiney) then they will cause a hi pitch, very unpleasant sound at low speeds but stop when u apply the brakes. If u know what ur doin, its best to scuff the pads... More

It could be your brake pads. They will whistle when they are getting near time to be changed. If you wait to long you will hear that metal against metal sound and that means you need to get it in for immediate attention.

brake pad wear sensor.Time to change them pads! With all the answers I thought I would be one of dozens for this obvious >the pads have a metal clip that touch the rotors when they are worn to a certain level. What makes it sooo obvious is you dont hear the sound when you apply the brakes.
