Is the best way of voting thoughtfully choosing what you spend your money on?

I find it difficult to believe that my political vote makes a difference (don't worry, I still do it). That's a different story when I spend my money. I feel like I am directly contributing to a "cause". When I hear of a company that treats its workers exceptionally well or has a functional program to lessen its negative impact on the environment it definitely makes me want to choose their products even if they cost a little more. So, in a free market economy, is the socially conscious educated consumer essential to a better society? Or, is this impossible because of a prevailing 'cheaper is better' mindset?

You may not change the course of history by doing this, but you keep the good companies in business. Every little bit helps! You have the right idea in my book. And, your heart is in the right place.
