If I major in sociology will I still be able to become a child therapist?
All my life I have wanted to work with kids. I had a troubled childhood and no one to talk to. I have always wanted to be a child psychologist. Now that Im about to start college I dont thimk psychology is right for me. I am really interested in sociology. I also feel its a broader field than psychology. It would allow me more job options. I really want to counsel children and at risk teens though. Please help!

No. To become a psychiatrist you can go on to grad school, with any degree. However to become a child therapist, if you don't want to major in psych, then Social Work is your answer. You can talk to a sociology professor. I tried doing that, but, you probably gonna benefit more since you already know want you want to be. The sociology professor, whom I talked to, had worked as a counselor at a hospital. She said she didn't like it very much.

I would say to major in social work..Soc is more research and psychoogists and soc WILL require a masters degree to use. You can go to work immediately with sw. Social Work is probably a broader field than soc...you can work in schools, doctor's offices, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
