I had a great uncle killed in WW2 whilst serving in RAF over France. How do I get more information?

His name is Herbert Sydney McCartney, killed on 28/08/42 whilst serving with 35 sqn, service number 1354651. I cannot find any more details except where he is buried (Montcornet Military Cemetary, France). He is listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site as being an air gunner. I believe he was in a Mk2 Halifax which flew from Gravely in England.

Otherwise you could contact his squadron for more information or the air gunners who may be able to provide you with additional details. Alternatively try the census office or register for births marriages and deaths for the areas... More

I did some work at an archive for the Royal Welch Fusiliers when I was at uni and there was all sorts of information there... More
