Getting links is EXTREMELY important in SEO. You need to get as many links as you can for your site. Note though that not all links are equal: a link from an "authority" site such as Washington Post or Columbia University or Department of Defense is worth significantly more than several links from little known websites.
Before, it was easier: just do reciprocal links with other sites; and the more the merrier. Others even pushed this up a notch by using link request software that will automatically search sites for you and automatically submit a request.
However, search engines have clamped down on the game of getting top rankings by exchanging links left and right. Now, the rules have changed: search engines look at any unnatural patterns in linking and penalizes those sites. Matt Cutts, a Google software engineer whose blog is one of the best sources of SEO information (Google specifically) said in a post:

The sites that fit “no pages in Bigdaddy” criteria were sites where our algorithms had very low trust in the inlinks or the outlinks of that site. Examples that might cause that include excessive reciprocal links, linking to spammy neighborhoods on the web, or link buying/selling.

Big Daddy is the name of the major Google update last year that started Dec 2005 to March 2006
Be careful of reciprocal links as you need to only link to sites in your industry/theme: if your site is about internet marketing, be sure to put links only on your site to other internet marketing sites, and not to mortgage or credit consolidation site.
Search engines, and in particular Google, frowns upon this and your site can be penalized for it. In fact, some sites are completely removed from Google's index due to heavy reciprocal linkage.
The easiest way to get links? Provide GREAT content that other sites would willingly want to link to you. Focus on your content and making sure that it is fresh, new, different, innovative and worth reading.
I checked out your site and the first thing I noticed is that about 75?f your homepage space is Google Adsense ads with only about 5?f content (20?or the navigation and banner). There's basically no content except the ads. I can understand that you want to increase your Adsense income, but don't do it at the expense of almost stripping the site with content and just putting in ads all over the place. That is not going to get you any links.
My suggestion is to rethink your homepage - what do you want users to do, to get from your site. Then put the ads blending them with the content. But don't make the ads the only content.
Good luck
