How can I help myself?

I had a realisation this weekend that I am suffering from depression again, I had it 2 years ago and managed to lift myself from it although at the time I was on tablets and had my fiance with me. I am now in a place where I only know the people from work, I love my job but am finding things increasingly hard to cope with, I think the depression is a reaction to the last year in which I had a rough ride with my fiance then we broke up in October. I feel relieved now I know whats wrong with me and it explains alot, but now I need to get back on my feet, look after myself - but I dont know where to start, and some days I just cry and cry. I need to be stronger- I am quite negative about things- which was never me I had a really positive outlook on life at one point. Im not unnactracitve and would like to say have a great personality thats quite witty, but I feel helpless at the moment, whats the best steps to take- I realise I have to speak to my Doctor.

I agree don't start labelling urself as depressive & all that negative thought. Doctors (I'm sorry to say) mostly are of no help but give anti-depressants & sometimes refer you to a psychiatrist. But you can ask your GP to refer you for CBT (cognitive behavioural therpay) on NHS but usally there's long waiting list... More

I'm sorry how you feel. I think the first step is you need a good friend who you can talk to and go out with. Is your family close at hand. Maybe they can help. I always find nobody can help like close family. Sorry I cant be of more help. I wish you all the best for the future, and just try to be positive.

Yes, you need to see your doctor first, because depression will colour everything and push you towards making the wrong decisions in life. Make a conscious effort to socialise with people at work if asked (even if you don't like them that much - you meet other people that way) , look after yourself, get regular sleep... More

First, understand and appreciate that when you get like this, you are your own worst enemy. You cannot trust yourself, and you might very well be lying to yourself when you say that you can "lift yourself" out of it. For example, you may say you "need to get back on your feet" when, really, what you need to do is mourn... More

The best way to see mental disorders is a series of varying degrees of depression and stress. Mild stress produces an excellent person for creativity and performance.
