What to do with a boss that’s really incompetent, but way too nice to get mad at?

I work in the engineering department at a company. I have a boss who is really bad at planning projects. Most of the time he asks me to do things that really don’t need to be done, or work on projects that I know are going to be cancelled or restructured in a few days or weeks, and make no sense working on them. But he always asks for stuff in the nicest of ways, you just can’t say no, or get mad about it. He can barely do his job. 2 engineers do all his work, sometimes they complain about it, but they both say he’s so nice you just can’t stay mad at him. He’s always smiling, joking around, everyone likes him. Some of the company managers wanted to have him replaced the sometime ago, but everyone including myself said he was a the greatest boss ever, and we didn’t want him to go. He’s not good at his job, but we might get a boss who’s mean and even more incompetent. What’s the best way to deal with this type of boss?

Do the work to the best of your ability and make him look good. There is a lot to be said for a boss to create a positive work environment. His job is to create an environment for you to be productive. If that environment is pleasant and you enjoy doing your job, what are you complaining about? Keep this boss!!
