	Does anyone child/children attend the sylvan learning center? If so is it a good learning center? I'm thinking of putting my 8 year old in it because of his reading skills. Just wanted to know if it's a good place for him to learn. Asked By: mind_ur_business05 - 3/6/2007

I've actually been tutoring for Sylvan for more than 8 years now and I would recommend it to almost anyone. I say almost because sometimes problems stem from either serious behavioral/emotional issues or from serious learning disabilities, neither of which Sylvan is qualified to address. When students are dealing with just plain being behind in some skill areas, or minor learning disabilities, Sylvan is great! They start out with an assessment that targets individual skills and finds any gaps, as far back as those gaps might go. For example, your son might actually be totally capable of understanding his reading passages, but doesn't have a good sight vocabulary and/or phonics training, so can't figure out what the passages say. OR he might be a really good reader but struggles to read between the lines to answer main idea, cause and effect, or inference questions. The assessment is very thorough, they'll do math AND reading for the same price if you want, and they'll go over it completely with you and answer all your questions afterward. Also, it doesn't commit you to sign up for tutoring. You can make that decision as much later as you need. If you do enroll him, the program works so well for so many different kinds of students. His program is created just for him depending on the results of the assessment, so he won't be doing any work that's too easy or too hard for him just to stay with his classmates. The ratio during tutoring is 3 students to 1 teacher and we're all certified, so he'll get plenty of help and you'll get plenty of communication and progress checks. Also, classes take place on weekends and evenings so you can set up a schedule that works best for you. If you're uneasy at all, feel free to visit a Sylvan and look around. Ask to speak to a director to see if you like the staff. Observe classes to see if you like the set up and interaction. (I don't know about all centers, but at my center in Austin at least, it's probably more considerate to do those at different times. During class, the directors tend to be busier than during the business day.) Anyway, I could go on and on. I love my job because I love those kids and it's a joy to see them learning and becoming more confident. It works! Sylvan has a website at www.educate.com where you can chat with online consultants, download coupons for assessments and tuition, and find contact information for the center closest to you. Good luck to you and especially to your son, whatever you decide. EDIT: We do NOT just sit there and watch them do worksheets. There's a ton of interaction and guided practice! I get off of my shifts there feeling like I just had a pot of coffee from keeping up with those kids. :) I don't know if the person who said that is making it up or actually had a bad experience with a Sylvan -- I'll be the first to admit that ANY business can differ from one center to another -- but any Sylvan would happy to let you watch classes taking place so you can see for yourself. My son attended a few years back while in 7th grade. he went for the same thing. he was way below level when he started. it took about 5 months but he did get back up to grade level. it's very expensive though. have you tried a tutor? they are less expensive and most will come to your home or do it at his school. we tried the tutor first but when it wasn't enough, we went to sylvan. Well some kids learn easier than others... i havent been there , or know anybody that does.... but think of it this way..... the better the commercial the better the place. (cuz you probably found it by the commercials) because when you see a good commercial it means the company makes a lot of money (a lot of business) so it should be a pretty trustworthy place to go if a lot of people go there. and if it doesnt work out with your kid, keep trying good luck Answered By: kasey - 3/6/2007

In junior high my parents made me go because I was really rebellious and cutting classes. Marks were slipping etc...It really did help in a few ways. I got back on track and remembered I could do it. 	Have you ever used tobasco to punish your children like Kimmys? I was horrified that KimmyS actually said to put tobasco on this person's child's fingers to make her stop biting her nails. 	How do I get a job with Dodgy work history and no experience? Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid.
