How much money does the average publisher spend on a new author?

Im not talking about how much of an advance they give a new author, i mean how much do they spend to advertse him or her and get the word out on their book?

This varies wildly. Mostly, a new author's book will be shown to booksellers by a distributor, along with other books. The book will appear in the publisher's catalogue, if any.
