Can a web developer give me some advice??

I am about to take some classes for my MCSD .Net. To learn web-based apps. using microsoft .net famework and so on. But I am also interested in becoming a Database Administrator. I want to have a career that I can become a independent contractor or consultant. I am not sure what route I should go. The job market seems crazy and not must grace. All employers expect you to know every program language know to man. Can anybody give me some insight to these careers and what one is better. Thanks
