What does it mean when the mother cat attcks the kittens ?
The kittens are only 8 days old and the mother cat has started batting them with her paw and sometimes even bitting them lightly on the neck . This is worrying because the mother cat wont sit with the kittens and feed them.

I know just how to answer this. My mother cat nursed the kittens for about 6-8 months or so and then started attacking her kittens. The mother is just trying to ween the kittens and try not to let them nurse anymore. Every since we got the mother cat fixed, she has been attacking her kittens. My kittens just turned 1... More

maybe mother cats have the right idea, keep the kids under control, its not serious if she is not drawing blood etc, might be worth talking to vet though xxx

The kittens are a bit young to be being batted by its mother. Be careful though, I know a cat that ate her kittens. Could be a bonding problem, or maybe the kittens were handled by the owner too soon. Try to make sure they are given privacy, she might come to terms with them.

Kittens mature faster than puppies but when my dog had pups, I saw her paw whip one to the back of the cage to show her disapproval; not to just this pup but the others at various other times; Moms need to train and we interpret it as hostile; the back of the neck is how all animals move or give a nudge to hey quit... It sounds like she may have low levels of maternal instinct. Its too early for her to be weaning them. It would be best not to breed from her again... More

It could be that the mother cat doesn't like the kittens so she batts them and attacks them. If the mother has had kittens before there are usually some litters that she doesn't like so she'll get away or attack them. If she's not feeding them go to your local pet store and they have a certain kitten formula and kitten... More

If the kittens are only 8 days old she is NOT weaning them it means that you or someone else has handled the kittens way to early you should call a vet and ask what you should do because in all honesty she might eat which ever one was handled or kill it.
