How much Is Heterophobia a problem in the gay community?

I'm a straight male (black) who works in a creative professional field dominated by gay men. The discrimination I've faced from being straight has always been about 10-fold what I have faced being Black. Does the gay community ever address this issue of some of it's people hating to be around, or work with straight people. Or how so many are just "uncomfortable" having anything to do with straights personally. Which in my case is as problem, as some of these "uncomfortable" people have been my superiors in the past. I sometimes feel like just rejecting job offers that involve a gay superior because I'm getting tired of the whole office "gay mafia" syndrome (this is a well-known phenomenon/phrase in my field) and want to protect my career advancement options without dealing with heterophobic discrimination. P.S. I'm cool with, and hang with everybody, so please don't suggest that I'm giving off some negative "vibe". If anything over the years, at first, in a new job, most people assumed I was gay because I was so comfortable and friendly with everyone. mdbshop - You are right. And yes I am in a large city. NYC. And no, I'm not going to let heterophobes run me out of town. I think this is maybe more of a male/male sexual orientation issue. I don't think straight women have to deal with this from gay men.

Well, I think it depends on the 'kind' of gay person. As I see it, there are a few kinds of straight people: truly accepting of homosexuals, wants to be accepting but freaks out when someone they know closely or are related to comes out, and homophobic. And some people are in between. With gay people, it seems there's... More

I have met a couple of people in my life who are what I would consider "heterophobes" but it is EXTREMELY rare. Usually, as long as a straight person is cool with us, we are cool with them. In fact, at my last job, we had a really great mix of straight and gay, all genders and races and it seemed that everyone got... More

A heterophobe is just as bad as a homophobe. And any kind of discrimination is just plain wrong. I suppose I do have "basherphobia", but I'm not foolish enough to believe that all straight people are bashers... More

I have a gay uncle who pretty much expresses contempt for anything "normal" or mainstream. It is comical mostly, but in the workplace I can see where this would get old. Heterophobia, wow. Goes to show that everybody is prejudiced in one way or another. My advice is to document any and all incidents and whip a suit... More

Gays will always suffer from heterophobia. If you want to see acid being spit , just mention ex-gays to a homosexual. They are terrified of the fact that people can change from gay to straight and live happy , productive lives. The HATE you will see is incredible. Heterophobia is definitely a problem in the gay... Heterophobia is less common among homosexuals, than is homophobia among heterosexuals. All this nonsense that homosexuals are trying to eliminate heterosexuality and make everyone gay is nothing more than homophobic propaganda.
