Is there any scholarly discussion on the difference between being fair and being right?
I've found that sometimes the right thing to do is not always fair. This issue has come up with respect to how my parents treat me and my other siblings, and also how I treat my kids. Are we exalting fairness (equal access to education, jobs) over rightness (helping those truly at risk, sometimes at the expense of those who've played by the rules)? Any thoughts or points to scholarly research on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Fair is relative and subjective. Right is relative and subjective. Neither will ever be absolute. What is the right thing to do today may not be the right thing to do tomorrow.

It happens all the time. In doing the things considered right, it isn't always the fair thing to do. I agree, on the personal edge of this argument, to do the right things, thank you.
