What education is required to become an elementary school teacher?

I am doing a report on my career of choice, a second grade teacher. I am having a bit of difficulty finding a website or even a straight out answer to my question "What education is required to become an elementary school teacher?" Citations would be appreciated.

you go to college for 4 years and get a bachelor degree in education. some states make you take a test before they will give you certification. you practice teach before you graduate college to learn how to put your lessons to work in a classroom. it's an apprentice level job. some teachers get their master's... You need a Bachelor's degree in elementary education from an accredited college or university. Then you will need to be certified by taking a test in the state where you plan to teach.

It might vary from state to state but here in California, you need a four year bachelors degree plus another year to year and a half of teaching courses (includes student teaching) to earn a multiple subjects teaching credential for teaching a self-contained classroom (mostly elementary).
