Anybody know how to convert a freestanding stove/oven from natural gas to propane?

I have a stove that is equipped for natural gas. Only problem is, I use propane in my home. How easy is it to convert it? It's a GE freestanding gas stove/oven. Actually, Lowes has told us that we can order the parts and change the orifices ourselves. They did not mention a thing about it being illegal to do it ourselves. Seems like it's a very common thing to do. Though Lowe's tells us it's easy to get parts and convert it ourselves, it's a very scary thought. We've been getting advice from one extreme to the other. Do it...Don't do it...it's safe..it's NOT safe. How does one decide?

How confidant do you feel, in your ability to perform a task, that done incorrectly, could cause a fire? Does your insurance cover accidental loss of life or property, based on your changing out all the orifices in your stove and cook top? Why even consider performing this, when your health, and your families health... More

I don't think it is difficult (have had this situation several times). However, you should call someone from the gas company to change it over. I was looking for someone to service a gas stove and hot water tank. I was told to call the propane company because they are familiar with the flow, temperature settings of... More

If you go to your local hardware store they can help you. You need to buy fittings for each burner. I did this for our camp stove when we moved a trailer on the lot. They will need to ask you some questions about the stove too. Maybe a hardware/plumbing supplier would be best.

Belle, the orifice is also called a jet. Don't worry, it's a safer job than you think.

Check with GE. Manufacturers provide conversion kits with instructions for that.

You have to change (or drill out if you're handy) the jets. You're propane dealer should be able to do it or at least recommend someone.

Hi If the unit is new (1 yr or less) Call 1800 GE Cares and they will do it for you under warrentee. If not there are several things you must do to convert and adjust. Is it New? PS the conversion orifices come with the unit they are just hidden.

Go to any place that sells appliances, tell them the make and model of your range and they can order the orifice kit you need. They are very easy, safe and quick to do yourself. It shouldnt take longer than 30-40 minutes to complete. Most who tell you not to do it are afraid of natural gas and propane but you wont be... More

Simple solution is to ask GE - since it is their product and they are legally responsible for it's safe operation - maybe they do provide a kit to safely convert the stove. I used to make my own parts to do that when I worked in a Lightbulb factory and had to make burners to melt and shape glass into lightbulbs. The... More

It is noti ILLEGAL and you can purchase a naew orfice form Lowes or stores that sell parts for gas stoves. It is not difficult to make the change. Just make sure you provide the company with the model & serial number so they can order the exact size orfice for you.

Belle, check your owners Manuel for the conversion info.newer models of most appliances have needle caps that merely need to be adjusted for the proper gas and it will also tell you how to adjust the pressure regulator.LP.and NG. have different operating pressures
