Is it possible to make a living out of running a community theatre?

Recently the president of the board of directors of our community theatre group resigned. It was not a paid position and the theatre is a non-profit. Has anyone made a living from community theatre? I currently have a full time job and two small children, otherwise I would consider taking over. No one else on the board wants to run it. This is an elected position with two year terms, but I could convince the rest of the board to make it a paid position if I devoted my full time to it. But would there be enough money to pay me a salary? The theatre is in a suburb of Rochester NY. We raise funds for our productions and schedule four per year. I wonder if it is worth a try.

It's not easy, but it can be done. You may want to seriously evaluate the importance of the theatre group and the value of your time... More

If your performances have enough sex and violence, you'll make money.

I don't know of anyone who has made a living by solely running a community theatre. Is it possibly? Theoretically, but you'd have to pull in enough money to pay your salary plus the performances. That's a tall order. If you're looking for a stipend, plus expenses, that's probably more reasonable.

Based on the one community theater I was involved in, no you can't. The guy in charge was married to an attorney and that is how he managed to keep it going for awhile, but eventually it died. It is a lot of work and something to do if you love it, but not if you want to make a living.
