Is there a psychological explanation why certain people overly exaggerate and brag about everything?
This person thinks he's better than everyone at everything, thinks he know's everything. It's difficult working with someone like that. He constantly brags about everything. He spends more time talking to people about himself, what he buys and what he is doing than actually doing anything at work. He tells the same stories over and over again. Any suggestions about how to deal with him without getting fired from my job?

peopel are insecure and saying things out loud reassures them and boosts their self esteem, I'm guilty of this too. try to rememebr you are dealing with someone fragile here and maybe they seriously just need a hug so to speak.

Insecurities. He needs to covince himself how great he is. If he isn't the boss I would just tell him that you really don't have time to listen to his stories and that your not really impressed about what he thinks he knows or has.

ignoring him will shut him up faster than anything. without an audience he has no one to play to. If it is your boss then you might want to look for another job or annonymously slip a note to his boss.
