What is the best way to ask for more time in considering a job offer?

I have received an offer from a company and they need me to start by the end of May. Problem is there is a potential opportunity opening up in a couple of weeks with my current employer. I have spoken to the hiring manager regarding the position with my current employer and think it would be an excellent fit for me. I have not given notice yet to my current employer, so they don't know of my intention to leave the company. I'm not dissatisfied with my current employer, and would stay with them if this opportunity becomes available. Also, the hiring manager and I seem to mesh pretty well. How can I ask for an extension on the offer I've received without running the risk of losing the offer and also running the risk of the opportunity with my current employer not panning out?
