Do I have to learn any DBMS extensively in order to use a database in my Java applications?

Nowadays, all significant applications in one way or the other involve database connectivity. Do I have to learn any DBMS extensively in order to use a database in my Java applications, or the SQL classes in the API can do the job? I mean, do I have to learn DBMSs like Oracle, mySQL etc or I can just learn SQL on itself, and be able to do all the manipulations that I might need with the SQL classes in Java? If I don't have to, then why is Oracle very much committed to Java - why all those JDeveloper etc?
