Are there any states with a shortage of Social Studies teachers?

Hi, I Live in NY and I am completing my masters and will be certified for 2007-8. Its is difficult to find a Social Studies job here in New York and so my wife and I are willing to move pretty much anywhere( its so expensive here anyway). Ive noticed that even growing areas like Las Vegas and North Carolina need teachers but not necessarily SS teachers. Is there any state or area where there is a shortage of Social Studies teachers....or should I begin learning chemistry? Thanks for any help.

I live in NC and in certain parts of the state( mostly rural areas) there is a shortage for social studies teachers. However, it is not as bad as math, science, or exceptional children. Social Studies, like English is one of those where it is most difficult to find a position. Do you happen to have a minor in math or science? It would help a great deal. Best of luck to you and I hope you find something in a good place!

You'll have a harder time, even up into the far future. Visit any college campus and you'll see hundreds to thousands of graduates in social science divisions while the physical sciences have only a few dozen, if even that. That gives you some indication of the supply pool.

social studies is not in demand as it does not get tested the same as english and math atleast that is how it is in california. english and math teachers can get jobs left and right. and ontop of it you already have your masters which might be a factor against you. districts will have to pay you more right off the bat...
