What are people's feelings on the best in-ground pool filter for a large pool?

My pool is 40x20 with a 10x20 lap lane extension and will need a new filter. The pool company recommends a DE filter (Jandy) and another person that is in the pool business recommended to me a cartridge filter. He says that they are much improved from older versions, require no backwashing, and do a very good job of filtering. Just trying to get some opinions on the pluses/minuses of the different fitler types and brands. Thanks ps- its a vinyl liner pool with a heater. there are trees near by. And I just had a salt water system installed. If any of that plays into the equation. Thanks again

the trick with filter is to clean them on a regular basis regardless of how much you used the pool... best way is to have 2 sets so when one is being cleaned the other one is working to maintain your water.
