What's the best way to get a job as an electrician or heavy equipment operator?

I wanted to start a job as an Apprentice Electrician or a Heavy Equipment Operator. There are no unions here in Denver that I can find for either career. I don't have any inside connections, and I don't have a college education. I have tried Craigslist but most companies want someone with experience. So, how do I get experience if I need experience to get experience? Thanks for your help with either electrical or heavy equipment.

I know people who have went to school to become an electrician and never got a job. Keep calling everyone, even the small companys just to get you foot in the door. Then after your sure your cut out for it you can think about going to school if you want to speed up your pay.
