What's the best way to plan a career in America in an increasingly unstable job market?

Stable jobs really do not seem to exist in America anymore. Layoffs and jobs shipped overseas seemed to be the norm. How does one build a career in America and get access to benefits?

Stable careers in the US exist and they are the norm. The news is reporting the bad news about the job market, the only news that sells.
