What is the difference between San Francisco and Oakland ?

In terms of neighborhoods, housing, demographics, entertainment, there much of a difference ?

San Francisco is richer, more expensive to live in. The air in SF is cleaner because of the wind coming off the ocean. For jobs it depends what kind of job, but Oakland has more surrounding suburbs so probably has more jobs. The two cities are so close that in some ways it doesn't really matter which one you're in... The bridge - Golden Gate. Most people go to San Francisco to work and to play. Oakland is more residential and has a reputation for being a little less sparkly than San Francisco.

SFDude's answer is right on track. Oakland is older and dingy (but more affordable). Schools are bad (I ended up being pulled out of public school and placed in a private one)....

In addition to what others have said, I'd like to stress the point that for both cities - the neighborhood is absolutely key. Although a large part of the industry side of Oakland is not great, there are definitely neighborhoods in Oakland which are much NICER than many neighborhoods in SF... More
