Is it best to apply for child support through the state program, or through a private attorney?
Do the state programs request the same amount of child support as a private attorney would? This is a case where a father has left the country and paid no child support for three years, but has a highly respected and well paid academic job as an ergodic theorist mathematician.

All child support is based off of your state regulations and estimates of child support. It is free of charge for you to contact your local child support agency and file for child support. A private attorney would charge you a fee. The state agency would not charge you a fee. It would be better in this case to go through the state agency because once you obtain the child support judgment, they will take the steps necessary to seize his tax refunds.
