How strict are the background checks for police agencies?

I'm thinking about applying for a job as a Deputy Sheriff. I'm pretty straight now, but many years ago (7+) I did hard drugs (coke, crystal) and got a DUI. Would that neccessarily disqualify me? I'm thinking it probably would, but can someone verify it?

The checks get tougher the higher you go. Federal agencies like the FBI, CIA, USSS are very intensive. A county agency, depending on how rural or metropolitan the jurisdiction, will have the easiest background checks. As for the DUI, if there is no criminal history after this, don't sweat it. well if your white pretty strict i think. apparently if your black you can have convictions for breaking into girl friends houses and threatening them. supplying service weapons to drug dealers also o.k. maybe that's just in canton ohio though.

DQ partner. The DUI looks bad, but the coke and crystal are auto DQs. At least they are in large cities and civilized parts of the country ; ) The main reason is your past coming up in court when a defense attorney is trying to get his client off.

They are now very strict about who they let carry a gun and badge, because there are too many cases of bad eggs falling through the cracks in recent times and giving police a bad rep.
