Is there a demand for real estate appraisers?

I'm living in Salt Lake City and I'm considering taking an online course to get certified as a real estate appraiser. So, I'm wondering... is there a demand for appraisers? And, what does one need to do after becoming certified to start working? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In my area, you have to mentor for a period of time with another appraiser, and since the current appraisers have a pretty good situation, they are not mentoring new appraisers. I am typically waiting about a week to get an appraiser out, a couple more days to get the report.
