How difficult is it to sell cars?

I am considering a career change at 55. I have very good customer service and communication skills. I dress well, and it sounds like something I would like to do. I have been told it is very competitive, and most dealers have very high expectations. Can I hear from individuals that have sold cars.

I am a sales manager in the "car business." Alot of people will tell you it's all about ripping people off and making the most money you can. The problem is, none of them have had a good experience with a dealership. This business is really the "people business" as we are consultative sales persons. WE take the... More

It is very hard. Think of your past experience buying a car. It's a big purchase and there are lots of dealerships out there. One wrong move and the customer walks away. I don't want to talk you out of it, but it is a lot of work and there is a lot of turnover in the biz.

Oh, yes. Dealers have high expectations. Most sales jobs do have highly unattainable goals. I sold Toyota, Oldsmobile, and GMC trucks back in the mid 1990's. Seems the worst thing you can do is talk somebody into something they don't want, because you will hear from them again and again. I know all of us has bought something... More

My son tried it for awhile. You are under constant pressure to sell more and more cars. Salesmen are generally a backstabbing bunch, too. Very, very competitive environment. It's clearly not for everybody, as my son found out... More

I agree with your last answerer. In fact, I appreciate his comments very much. Selling cars can be a very rewarding career path especially if you are retired from another field. Most guys who are in that position tend to do well because they have the life experience and are old enough to not let people's attitudes... More
