Temporary Crown after a root canal, how long does it last?
I just had a root canal done on tooth #14 (upper molar) last week. The endodontist put in a temporary filling and asked me to visit a specialist to get the crown done. I have maxed out my dental insurance for this year. My question would be... is there a concept of a "temporary crown" and how long does it last/ how long can I wait until I get the tooth permanently restored with a permanent crown?

You can have a temporary crown placed (after a core or post & core) and then have the impression for the permanent crown in 2008. There shouldn't be a problem with doing it like that, as long as you don't wait too long... More

The dentist could put a temp crown and wait until your are ready for the perm. However, I would not wait for the temp itself because you run the risk of fracturing the tooth and end up needing it to be extracted! Temps are only temps and are not meant to last a long period of time. A molar takes alot of chewing... More

When the tooth is preped for a permanent crown, a temporary is placed while the lab makes the final crown. It is only recommended that you wear the temporary for 3 weeks. In order to even get the crown started you would have to pay at least half of the cost anyway. So if your insurance is maxed you would have to pay... More

The temporary filling the endodontist put in probably won't last very long. Teeth that have root canals usually need 2 procedures done, they need a build-up ( a big filling that goes under a crown) and the crown. Sometimes the build-up can be done and the crown done later. This may be an option for you. Since your... More

I think they last pretty long, you just have to be careful f what you eat. No chewing ice or anything super hard, or no sticky things like taffy. I had a temp. crown for a couple months, with no problems, but I wouldn't reccommend trying to keep it very long.
