Can someone ask if you are gay on a job interview?
I have a friend who works a technical writer at an assembly plant; he's the one who makes and updates all the work instructions. My company does work for different companies. I recommended my friend for a job interview at another assembly plant for the same position. He had 3 interviews; one with the human resources person, another one with the corporate person, and finally he had one with the quality department manager. He tells me at the end of the last interview when he was going out the door, the manager said: "one last question, a*********y?" My friend answered it was something personal, he is gay though. I don't understand why he would ask for that in big company for a position in the engineering field.

That is a violation of your friend's civil rights. There are equal opportunity for employment laws. The federal law protects against discrimination due to age, sex, race, gender, disability, and religion and within these factors fall sexual preference. I think your friend answered the question appropriately.

they can not ask that they are breaking the law

No, it's not legal. I think your friend should report the interviewer to his/her superior. Maybe the interviewer was hitting on him.

If they do, it'd have to be optional and for statistical purposes only. Otherwise I'm sure that violates some sort of disclosure or harassment law. Or maybe the interviewer was just coming on to him.

A manager can ask anything they want to but that doesn't mean it was legal. And any manager that would ask that or any personal question is more than likely not a good manager to work for. He should be able to check with whatever the group for gay rights is called.

For no reason can they ask that, and if they do and they don't get the job because of that reason, you can press charges.

That guy should be fired, period! He needs to be reported. I noticed some people said maybe he was hitting on him. That still doesn't make it right. He's not professional.

Shana has the right intent, but not all the accurate facts. I am an HR executive with over 25 years of experience. Currently, the federal law does NOT protect gays and lesbians in the work place. Certain state laws DO (i.e. California, where I work has some of the strongest ones), but sexual orientation (not "... More
