How many oto cats to do the job?

I have a 55 gallon tank with lock of caves and live plants. It is right in front of a window and gets lots of sun, so I have quite an algae problem developing. How many oto cats would work? I've heard 4-6 would be good, and the last pet shop told me 12; I think that is too many. Also, would 3 be plenty for a 10 gallon tank (that is not in front of a window)?

I think your best bet would be to move the tank away from the window. Algae cannot grow without light. The cats I've had in the past did more grazing on the other fish's food than on the algae. Bringing in new fish would also risk bringing in diseases.

I have 4 in a ten gallon. I also feed them algae wafers, about twice a week. But they do a wonderfull job on keeping it clean. I dont see why you couldnt have 12, in your tank. It is big enough. They like to be in schools. Plus normally a few will die, within a day or 2. Some are really fragile, and some are hardy. I... More

I have 3 in a 20 gal. tank. They do a real good job, I don't have live plants anymore, but i supplement their diet with catfish food. I have cory cats in there too. With live plants and sunlight, yeah, you will need more. 12 might be a good number to start with as they do not always make it. They are kind of fragile... More

1 oto cat per 10 gallons of water, and you'll probably still need to add some food like zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce for them. Also, try putting a mini blind up on the window :)
