What is the best vacuum for a grad student apartment? Low pile rugs and some tile floor?

The apartment is tiny and it is not easy to move furniture around.

You would definately want a canister then because they will be able to get under your furniture with out moving it. The Miele Antares has a great floor brush which is made for wood floors and it does a great job cleaning up. The only vacuum that didn't die on me right away is a shopvac type. Utility vac, like from a hardware/home improvement store. I'm rough on vacuums and they suck up everything, wet and dry. And they are cheap.

Upright hoover with the attachments. you can lower it to get under things. Get one with a beatar bar..
