Is switching between contract and permanent positions feasible?

I've always been a permanent contract software engineer, but I've been noticing a few good looking contracts on the job boards. Is it possible to switch between being a contractor and being permanent staff on a regular basis? What happens to your 'company' when you work for someone else?

It is possible but can be an adminastrative nightmare with tax. also you have to resign from a permy job and thats usual a months notice where contractors are generally start asap.. beign in IT i prefer to be Perm even though id get more contracting. Jobe security and all that

If it is possible, I would first check with your company with which you work to find out if there is any "conflict of interest". I have worked 2 jobs for the past 10 years. I checked with my main company first to make sure there was no conflict with the part-time company. I still retained excellent benefits, etc... More
