Why do politicians get a cushy job once they are out of office?

If they move into private commerce well OK but why should they get another publicly funded position almost automatically, even though they have done a lousy job in office. Thinking particuarly about T Blair and Jack McConnell (ex Scottish First Minister). Also moving on to the House of Lords. Thanks for correcting me Neil M. That was just laziness on my part.

Well, they're so used to all the "privileges", and everything they get being in parliament, that if they suddenly had to do an ordinary job, the shock would kill them.
