How do I start "cold" contact cover level for first journalism job?
I am about to apply for my first job in journalism as a newspaper reporter. I want to apply to all newspapers in my area, but most do not have any advertised opening for a reporter. I am struggling with how to open my cover letter since I cannot say that I am replying to an ad I saw or that someone referred me to the position? Can anyone offer advice? Thank you.

I think that Lizzie-tish said it all. I'm not in journalism, but in my line of work we often have stacks of resumes, no openings and lots of people interested in getting in. That's how I got started. Rather than a letter or email , I'd call either the managing editor or news editor, ask for an appointment , bring some of your stories you've done in a portfolio, along with your resume... More
