How do you manage a job with an overnight shift?

I am going into the psychology field, fresh out of college with a BA. I'd like to be a residential counselor at a live-in community program for troubled youth, and a lot of the available jobs are overnight hours on weekdays (like 11pm to 7 am). At first I refused the possibility of being an "Awake Overnight Counselor" because I didn't think I'd be able to have friends or continue seeing my boyfriend. For those of you who also work overnight hours, how do you manage to have social lives or accomplish other tasks during the day? Or even more basically, is it easy to sleep during daylight hours?

I've worked overnight shifts. I just slept when most other people worked and worked when most other people slept. The evenings were still there for socializing. The only thing I would suggest is heavy curtains for your bedroom window that block light and muffle noise from outside.
