What would happen to the UK and USA if ALL immigration stopped?

This is a reshape of a former question, i'm hoping to aquire less off topic responces from the rephrasing.

Specificly what would happen to the socially on both a local and global scale.

What would happen economically on a global and social scale.

In both countries similar things would happen. In both countries, immigrants supply a huge fraction of the very low skill, low cost labor, and the very high skill, high cost labor.

People say the American schools and hospitals wouldn't be overrun by illegals. This is sort of true. On the other hand, after a few years of no immigration, there would be severe nursing shortages, even with fewer people coming into the emergency room for things that don't require it. In Britain, there are also an awful lot of foreign doctors, in additional to, as far as I can tell, almost 100?oreigners among the nurses.

Elementary and secondary schools would probably be better off in a lot of ways. The universities would be in bad shape. Right now, American research is number one in the world by a long way because American universities attract the best researchers from all over the world. With only Americans to choose from, that gap would shrink by a lot. Britain has a similar dependence on foreign scholars. On top of that, many universities would have to close their graduate programs in a lot of scientific subjects, because there wouldn't be enough qualified people to fill the places for graduate school. Any American capable of completing a PhD of even moderate quality already is able to find a graduate school to take him/her, and still about 50?f science PhD students are foreign, so it's not like there would be American
students to fill their places. Again, the same is true in Britain. British universities would also suffer a lot from losing international undergraduate students, who pay high fees that help keep the universities running. The problems of not having enough students would kick in immediately, while the problems of not getting good enough staff would take longer, since only a few percent retire each year. A lot of software and engineering companies would close, too, for similar reasons.

Certain types of fruit would become a lot more expensive. I think rather than creating jobs picking the fruit at higher wages that native-born Americans would take, probably more things would become mechanized. Other industries, like fast food would also see prices go up a bit.

On the whole, both countries would see a lot of low-wage jobs disappear. Both countries have low unemployment rates. This means that there would be severe upward pressure on low-end wages if the low-end wage earners stopped coming in. A lot of companies in both countries are internationally competitive only because they can pay the low wages they do now.

America- much worse quality of play in baseball and ice hockey. Britain - much worse in soccer.

It's hard to say whether cutting immigration would be good for the home countries of the people who immigrate now. On the one hand, they'd have more of their own most talented and ambitious people. On the other hand, many of these people send money back home, and in a lot of cases, what the developing world needs more than anything else is capital, so that in the future they will be able to take advantage of their local talent. Right now, the talent is often wasted.

In the very long run, there would be real havoc in both places. Both places have government pension schemes. These are pyramid schemes. For this idea to be viable, countries need to have more workers in each generation than retirees. However, people are living longer and having fewer children, so the only way to solve this problem is to bring in immigrants.

On the other hand, the xenophobes would be happy that they wouldn't have so many foreign people around.

I'm not sure about the UK, but in the USA food would cost a lot more because farmers would have to pay enough to get non-immigrants to work on their farms.

Also everyone would have to clean their own houses and cook their own hamburgers.

On the positive side our schools and emergency rooms wouldn't be as crowded.
Answered By: Sjean - 8/29/2007
Nothing would "happen" for a while. Eventually there would be some economic effects due to the absence of cheaper labor.

In the US we're almost at Zero Population Growth with the exception if immigrants.

This is a good question! I wish I had a better answer.

I think that on balance it would be a plus for the US and the UK. And to the extent it was not, we could revise our laws to let more people in.

There are too many costs of many kinds, to the US at least, as things are now.

I think we need to take control of our borders.

It would mean that the best and brightest would try to go to other countries for opportunity like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other European countries...

I think English wouldnt be such a prominent language, not all immigrants are poor.

Depends. They already achieved their goal of an Hispanic majority in California. I might not reap the benefits unless I moved. However the rest of the country would not have to go through what i am and those who just don't get it will never have to. They will continue to have their jobs and benefits and as many employed people in their family as they did before. The people who were immigrating here would either immigrate someplace else, or, more likely move within their own country for better jobs as we do here.

All......legal and illegal? I would say for the US....a much needed period of breathing and adjustment phase.

We've OD'd and need some re-hab time.

When anyone goes from one extreem to the next there is a period where you have to get back to the basics. Which means....I could really care less about what's happening "globally". If we can't handle ourselves how are we expected to take care of anyone else? They have put the cart before the horse while wearing rose colored glasses and there needs to be some reassemnet time.

I see it as sort of like the person who can't say no and now they find their world in utter chaos. They planned to do good....intended it to all have a happy ending and now it's blowing up in their face. They spread themselves too thin.....thinking people have the same morals and values they have and now they are eye-ball deep in crap.

I would gladly accept the back lash from taking a step back to re-group from the situation than to let the snow-ball roll expecting it to resolve on it's own.

We don't need MORE people. This country became the best nation on earth with alot less. Our "baby boomers" aren't dead yet and we all had our "replacements". If our kids aren't "smart enough" it's because our funds have been spent on catering to people who shouldn't even be here instead of educating our own. MORE isn't always better. If that were the case then China and India would have ruled the world without our "help". China wouldn't have a shortage of women....on down the line.

Right now.....our world is FULL. To capacity. People aren't immigrating to wilderness anymore. Unless they want to send groups to the poles. Now it's more of insane buyers all hitting the sales on the day after christmas. A-holes and elbows all grabbing for what's there. Right now....it's the UK, America, Canada and Australia. There's no mass migration to fix the destitute areas. There's room.....they are all just heading for what they need or what they can get. Nobody's fixing what's been destroyed.....nobodys going to where they can help. I looked at the map of recent migration and I'm surprised the Earth hasn't tipped off it's axis.

Thats why I really hate the word "migration". Migration means you go and take what's there and then you move on to the next area. There's nothing about migration where one thinks of re-planting or leaving the area in the same way you found it for future use. Roam and take....roam and take. There's too many people on this planet to just roam and take anymore. You can't just go where the wind blows when everyone else is doing the same. Then people SETTLE. They settle down and ride the good times out with the bad. Now there's so many people there are those who choose to "migrate" while taking from those who have settled. If that makes sense. You can't just roam and get where the gettings good if it weren't for those who bore out the bad times to make it possible.

Immigration is like a food chain. For example if you mosquito's disappeared (not comparing Mexicans or immigrants as mosquito's) the food chain will suffer immensely. Slowly insects that depend on mosquito's will die off and it will be a repeat effect. What I am trying to say is without immigration, jobs will diminish as an entirety. It is a social structure. There would be no need for Border patrol agents, Custom agents, people working in offices that deal with immigration issues and so on and so forth. Welfare will decrease and schools and hospitals won't be so populated. Services in the hospitals and schools will sky rocket because so called non immigrants will demand better paying wages unlike the immigrants that work for minimum wage. Structures around the United States such as buildings and highways will suffer without immigration. Who is going to work on these? Food costs will be extremely high because what once caused a non immigrant $5.15 an hour to produce, will cost a farmer $8.00 for a white citizen. Restaurants will close or cost about $10.00 for a meal because no one is willing to work for cheap labor. My wish for one day will be like that movie....A day without a Mexican. I would love to see this world thrive without any immigrants.

At my company we advertised for some jobs and got hundreds of workers that applied for the jobs but instead of hiring a regular American they hired someone that was brought over on a special VISA form overseas. I heard there was many qualified applicants but they wanted to pay less so they claimed there was no qualified Americans so they could get a low paid foreigner. I think in today's economy there should be a stop of all immigration. Jobs should be for Americans in today's tough economy! Agree?

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!

I am currently a 1st year irregular college student taking I.T. I transferred schools and my majors never got credited. But it's okay because i am slowly getting the logics in programming in Java. This next semester i am taking a System Analysis and Design(SADSIGN) and i am getting nervous because even though i am pretty good at logics, i am not that good at coding. But since it is a case study, we will be on group, we will be four i think. Project manager, Analyst, Documentation, and the programmer. I am asking what jobs i can get after graduating I.T. because what if i graduated I.T. and still not that good at coding, i am hoping that there will be a jobs that will require less programming. Like Database manager or in Multimedia or in charge of Network. So is there jobs that doesn't require hardcore programming skills?
