I want to rip my whole collection of CD's so they are easily accessible. What software is best?

I started with Windows Media Player, it seems to do a good job. But then I noticed it just make .wma files, currently. Perhaps I can set it for something different. But you expert rippers out there, what do you use? What format to you rip it to? .aac? .mp3? .wma? What bitrate is best. What's important to me is ease of use, compatibility with other software for the file type, best quality and compression. Thanks in advance to you who really know about this stuff!

Use the option to output to .mp3 because it is the most compatible at a bit rate of at least 128kbps (CD quality). If you want you could use a higher bit rate like 192 or 256 (if you have a big hard drive and are not concerned with space). You can use Windows Media Player or iTunes.
