How to get a job if your are a late bloomer as a Mechanical Eng.?

I graduated at 30+ years old -- after being a Plumber and HVAC tech for many years -- with a BSME. Every company I work for thinks I can do anything but does not reward my efforts. I am always pigeoned-holed and a younger/minority person gets the best jobs. I can not find a engineering company that is even interested in hiring me, so that I can gain enough experience to get my PE. I have an EIT and I wish to get a PE. Because I am experienced I must just do every job under the sun for a company that is not engage in engineering design. I have registed in several web sites with no resutls. Any ideas how to find a company around the DFW area? RJ
