will a job as a support worker be good ground for social work?

I have just got a new job as a support worker (not carer) with mentally ill users of the service. However, I would like to become a social worker but cannot afford to do the degree as I already have a degree in theology. Would starting as a support worker give me some experience to internally train within my council as a social worker?

It will be good experience, though you still will need education in social work to be a social worker (you may be able to get a job with the title "social worker" but with out the educational background you would not really have the grounding in social work. DA

Well you know any job in social work will feel good. In the mental health there is a real need. It is hard to find people that want to work with people that are differnt from the norm. I would take this job with a postive attuitude and rool with it for now.

Well I am a social worker and this job sounds like you will be DOING social work, just without the educational background. To be a real social worker, one does need the knowledge base of it, but this job sounds like a really nice start to this field in general! Good luck!
