Do some managers start hiding information ?
Someone said "Most managers are incompetent. Over time they work out that this is the case and as things go wrong, what do they do? Do they share the problems, engage in group decision making. No what they do is start hiding information so that no one can criticize them. But everytime that talk to their staff they get negative feedback (or what the staff think of as positives suggestions about getting on with the job). So to avoid talking with staff they employ enforces, people whose job it is to enforce the rule of those in power and isolate the king from their subjects. Kick down kiss up guys get these jobs. They don't cause the problems in the project there are a symptom of the problem. Programmers can take the initiative, make continious positive suggestions. Go to managers with problems and solutions (yes I know it is the managers job, but hey, if they could sovle problems they would be doing instead of managing). Personally I see management as a problem solving activity. You support your staff who will usually bust their butt to do their best and if they know they have your support they will not be afraid to try harder and take risks. They will also feel happy to suggest solutions." end of quote To TG. Thanks. Terrific.

You seem to embrace contradictory models of management. The paranoid incompetent who stifles dissent, and the wise leader who welcomes input (at least from programmers?) and supports the staff. In my experience, the former is much more common.
