How long does it take to put together a website?

I'd asked a chap who works for himself to do my website (amongst other bits of graphic work). He's had the contents, including pricing for a few weeks and he has had the products required for photos for some time also. It will bascially be around 10 products and 4 gift sets - not a huge amount - and around 15 photos to add. I gave him a deadline of the end of September and yesterday I emailed him and said if I didn't have it by the end of the week then I'd be tasking someone else to do it. He was obviously a bit 'miffed' but I'd told him all along that I had this deadline due to Xmas approaching. Am I being unreasonable?

Asking how long it takes to put a website together is like asking how long a piece of string is - there are too many variables involved to make the question answerable except in the vaguest of terms. It depends on how busy he is with other projects and how much time is actually working and how much you are expecting. Is this just the front end, or was he setting up a backend for you like a content management system? Front end is what somebody sees when they go to a website. A backend uses a lot of programming and... More

You didn't mention whether you want "online" payment facilities eg PayPal linked to your web site. If its only a few pages with some graphics a good designer should be able to knock up a prototype in a day - but it is down to availability and whether there are un-resolved design issues that need to be addressed... As it seems a relatively straightforward and small website and you have provided all the data you are being more than reasonable. Did he give you a quotation in writing with terms of payment and setting out when he would let you have first sight of his design, how long for you to approve and then for any amendments... More
