So I just got laid off for the first time. How do I collect unemployment benefits in California?

I just got laid off from my insurance job.

Call the unemployment office (EDD) NOW. Don't wait. The sooner you call, the sooner things will be put into motion. The sooner you'll get your first check. Do it even if you think you'll be employed again soon. Because you never know. It may take much longer to find a job than you think. Good luck.

Call 1-800-300-5616 or on-line OR check out www.ca.gov and click on Employment and Labor on the left side of the side. This will take you to where you need to go.

Do not call the EDD office, nor go to one in person. Apply on-line for benefits and open a claim. It is much faster and more efficient than going to the office. The sooner you open the claim and get things moving along the sooner you can start receiving benefits.
