What is the procedure to become a mail sorter at the post office?

I would like to work at the post office sorting mail. I do not want to be the front desk clerk that weighs and send yours mail for you or a mail deliverer or 'mailman'. I just want to be one of the people that sort the mail in the back of the post offcice. I always see tons of people doing this at my local post office and was curious about it. If you work for the P.O. or know someone who does please let me know how I would go about doing this. To add: I am looking for 'temporary' mail handling work and not full time. After hours and weekends are fine. I am not looking for a 'career' position at this point as this would be a second part time job for me. I was told by someone that for temporary or part time positions there is no need for the exam or other requirements apart from a drug test and good driving record.

The first thing you must do is go to the USPS website and sign up to take the Postal Service Exam. That's the only way to get a job with USPS.
