Should the unemployed be allowed to breed?
A couple were having an interesting (and noisy!) debate on whether the unemployed should be able to have children. The women’s opinion was that “lazy unemployed scroungers on benefits should not be allowed to breed. It is disgusting, selfish and unfair on everyone. Especially the child – who has no positive role models from their parents” Let’s not debate the pragmatics of enforcing such a ban (i.e. the likelihood of getting the bill through parliament, the implementation and enforceability, etc). Instead, let’s focus on the morals of the debate. Should the unemployed be allowed to breed?

Is there a job available in the U.K. for every one who wants to work? Is there a job for everyone who is disabled and requires special accomodations to work? Is it the fault of every unemployed person in your nation that he/she does not have a job? Have any businesses failed or factories closed in the U.K that put... More

That would be a tough one to enforce, and what would the penalty be? I think the best course of action is to limit benfits, so having more kids will not result in increased benefits from the goverment.

Yes. People are unemployed at different times in their lives. It's probably the worst time to have a child if you want to look at it practically. But looking at it morally it's a no-brainer. I mean, if a man loses his job 6 months into his wife's pregnancy, should they terminate the pregnancy?

Well, there is some merit to idea of licensure for breeding, however to say that all unemployed people should be disallowed from having children is too broad. Perhaps, if unemployment is the standard by which we are using to determine worthiness, there should be a time period. After all, a couple may both have well... More

Why stop at the unemployed? Why not stop stupid people from breeding, or ugly people, or Republicans?

I don't think that "breed" is a nice way of putting it, but I do believe that if you are not able to support having a child that it is best to wait. Condoms are less expensive than diapers.

NO, But most people employed are not fit mentally either to have children. But the problem with the unemployed is that they suck welfare to hell.

the problem exists that the only job skill some people have is increasing their welfare benefit by increasing their family size.

Its wrong to tell somebody that they cannot have kids. If 2 people voluntarily choose to have kids (or to have sex for that matter), it should always be allowed. It is simply wrong to prohibit somebody from engaging in any voluntary activity (and impossible to implement, even though it would still be wrong if it were... More

Who said you have a right to even debate whether to "allow" or not? This is not a subject or a question you have a right to ask in the first place, because merely in asking your violating my right to live the way I choose.
